The Truth About Thais and Chopsticks

Ok…I’ll get right to it.The Truth About Thais and Chopsticks is ….. they don’t really use them. Well, yes there are chopsticks available all over Thailand. And you will see them at most sit down street side noodle shops in a box on the table. Most homes in Thailand are sure to have a couple sets of chopsticks but they are not the primary tools used for eating Thai food.

Common Utensils on Thai Dinner Tables

Most commonly on Thai dinner tables you will see a spoon and a fork. At almost all sit down restaurants and homes in Thailand you get a spoon and a fork. But wait, it gets better. Turns out you will see Thais using the spoon to feed themselves and the fork to load the spoon for the next bite. So if you want to eat like a Thai use the spoon as the main utensil, fork as your secondary utensil for rice dishes. For noodle dishes on a plate use the fork as the main utensil and the spoon as your secondary.

So When Do Thais Use Chopsticks

There are two common times you’ll see chopsticks in Thailand. First is when noodles are served in a bowl with soup. In this first example the chopsticks would be teamed up with an elongated Thai style soup spoon.

Second is with Thai barbecue. Thai barbecue is a dome shaped metal cover with a ring around for soup. Under the ring-lid is a fire commonly of charcoal chunks.

Where Are The Knives?

You’ll notice that the meat in Thai dishes is relatively bite size. This is why you do not see knives around Thailand. Knives are pretty much reserved for the kitchen during food preparation. Chicken and pork are tender enough to split with a fork and spoon. Onions, carrots, mushrooms etc. are also in bite size pieces so knives aren’t needed at the table.

Other Thai Eating Methods

Lettuce wraps became all the rage. You could call it a Thai Burrito in terms of popularity. Restaurants across America adapted versions of what Thais have been doing for hundreds, if not thousands of years. An example is our Larb dishes on our Northeastern Thai Special Menu. Larb Nur, Larb Ga and Larb Moo by request. American pronunciation is more like Laab, the “r” is almost unnoticeable. However you spell it, Laab or Larb, these dishes are traditionally wrapped in a leafy green … such as … lettuce. More authentically cabbage is used to wrap Larb dishes. Royal Thai Grill serves our Larb dishes with both Lettuce and Cabbage. Load up a leaf with chopped Beef, Chicken, Fish or Pork, roll and enjoy!
